Who cares about the Masters? What Augusta needs are some DECENT places to shop! This place has one mall that's always PACKED on weekends; the same goes for the other main shopping area. People use the Target shopping area to cut through on their way to the Bobby Jones Expressway (520) and it creates all sorts of traffic problems. You'd have to be a millionaire to shop in the "Surrey Center." I do like the stuff in there (no chain stuff ...pretty unique), but I can't afford to pay $200 for a shirt. Augusta desperately needs more shopping centers. I think it's big enough to support another mall.

The reason that Augusta is not built up like other cities, is because of all of the old people here who do not want to see change.

I think the problem in Augusta, Ga. is the lack of family oriented attractions, not lack of bars in downtown. If you build enough attractions that would make for a nice weekend, then they will come. Some examples are places like aquariums, zoos, perfoming art theatres to name a few.Maybe then we won't be a city folks just pass through. I think an aquarium and a performing arts theatre would compliment downtown well.I had a chance to visit the aquariums in both Chattanooga,TN.and Charleston,SC.and I really enjoyed them and would go again. We would be the first and the only city in Georgia to have an aquarium which would make us an unique tourist city. But I'm afraid we had better move fast or we will be left behind by other Georgia cities.

I agree - I've spent the last 20 years in Augusta and while I have watched it grow, it's mainly been with new strip malls and fast food restaurants. We have been lucky enough to get minor league hockey and baseball teams, as well as an arena football team but as far as culture and the arts we are failing miserably. And the few options that are available are usually run by the "old Augusta" crowd who has no interest in inviting new people into their group.

After visting Athens, Ga., I wonder why Augusta can't get it's act together. I know Athens's cute shops and arty atmosphere has much to do with the students at UGA. But still downtown Ausgusta has a good start, it just needs to build upon it. Offering an incentive to new business (tax break) might be a good idea. Also, I would LOVE to live in an Artist type loft place that does not cost an ar and a leg. A certain type of community like that would bring new life to downtown. Just a thought.

I agree with the person that stated we definitely need some new malls, and also new blood in this town. Augusta is a beautiful city and could attract many tourists, if we had more to offer. An Aquarium would be wonderful. Control of this city needs to be taken away from the "good old boys" who will not let anyone that is not "one of them" into the mainstream. A outlet mall would attract a lot of tourists here, we have the motels and hotels to accomodate them. Augusta needs a shot in the arm of adenalin, we need to get on the ball, or Augusta's only claim to fame ever will be the Masters
and that is only once a year, we need something to last at least 8-9 months out of the year.

If you want a shop that has affordable but nice clothes and unusual items for the house try Steinmarts, next to Books-a-Million. It is a great store and I have no affiliation with it. Augusta had two malls and one failed miserably. I am from a small town and I see plenty to do in Augusta, besides go to bars-that I also enjoy. An aquarium would be a great addition to the Riverwalk area. There are also two phases of extension for the Riverwalk that haven't gotten started yet, that would bring it up to Broad St. around the 8th street area. I think there are budget issues. There is also the big childrens attraction off I-20, that has some sort of boat ride, go-carts, etc. outside and games inside. There is a water slide going toward Martinez somewhere. Things have changed a lot since I moved here, so I have nothing to complain about. I think Augusta is a great city. I love it here. Changes are coming.

Thanks sylviawalker for the needed info! It's nice to see something positive posted. I knew there were more changes instore for Augusta including the demolition of several downtown buildings on broad street that have been vacant for years and are now just an eyesore. The demolition would provide more greenspace to the city (at least that's the idea.)

Continue with the Riverwalk projects; an aquarium there would be a great addition. No more malls, concentrate on downtown, especially since that's where the river is...we could be another "Olde Towne" to visit much like Charleston if done the right way. With the addition of Wicked Wasabi, Louie J, Blue Sky, artist row, I've seen an increase of young couples with children and baby boomers when I go there now. Need to encourage some new businesses i.e., nature store, jeans, holiday store, card shop, etc.
