Blue Star Shines in Art

If your artistic tastes run more to the contemporary-modern than the traditional landscape or still-life, then the Blue Star Art Space at 116 Blue Star was made just for you.
The non-profit, non-collecting contemporary art center was first opened in 1985 when a group of warehouses just off South Alamo Street (across Alamo from the Pioneer Flour Mill) were transformed into an arts district.
Currently the complex houses the 11,000-square-foot Blue Star Art Space, which features rotating art shows of high-caliber works, two commercial galleries, the University of Texas at San Antonio Satellite Space art gallery, "Say Si" (a high school art program) and 53 separate artists' lofts. The Art Space's mission is to advance contemporary art by presenting diverse programs and exhibitions where local and regional artists have an opportunity to showcase their work.
There are numerous events planned during the year. On most first Fridays of the month, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Art Space presents a collection, free of charge, to the public, and all galleries and artists lofts are open, as visitors stroll, enjoy refreshments and become immersed in the enjoyment of viewing really exciting contemporary works of art.
If you have your own transportation, there is plenty of free parking. Or, the complex is easily reached by the Blue Trolley route. The Blue Star Space's exhibition hall is in a two-story building to the rear of the complex. The Art Space Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For additional information on current exhibits, call 210-227-6960.
You might want to combine "a feast for the eyes" with a culinary feast as well. The Blue Star Brewing Company, located in the arts complex at 116 Blue Star, is San Antonio's only full scale brewpub, presenting a wide selection of hand-crafted beers, including golden and pale ales, smoked dark ale, stout and a fine, European-type pilsner. If beer isn't your favorite beverage, not to worry -- iced tea and coffee, as well as an outstanding wine list, are available for lunch and dinner. A special weekly event, the Saturday brunch, is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. House specialties include jerked chicken, mixed grills and a delicious, spicy shrimp and chipotle noodle dish. There are all sorts of sandwiches, omelets and salads in the large and varied menu. During cool evenings, dining or just sipping a favorite brew on the spacious wooden deck under the stars affords an enjoyable experience. For information or reservations, call 210-212-5506.
