 Avoiding a Tie-Up Situation
"I assume all endurance horses are tie-ups waiting to happen after any significant management change, as in long travel," says Nancy Elliot, D.V.M. "For the first few days (after travel) you really need to be aware of the most minute signs. The main thing is knowing 'normal.'"
Bad Trailering Experience Hard to Overcome
Help! My mare had a somewhat bad experience trailering once, and now it is a nightmare to take her anywhere. She was pulled through the hills by a somewhat inexperienced driver, who drove way too fast, and knocked her around in the trailer a bit. She will load perfectly, but once in she will thrash, and pull, and kick nonstop. She works herself into a panic, and she will keep this up for the entire trip, whether it is ten minutes, or three hours. I need help, I love to trail ride with her but I am worried she is going to hurt herself. I need help!
Competitive Trail Riding Fun for Horse and Rider
If you enjoy trail riding, experiencing new trails and making new friends, then you should consider trying competitive trail riding.
 Long-Distance Travel for Equine Athletes
Once a horse is as finely tuned as endurance horses must be, a spell of forced confinement presents a challenge to the horse's system.
How to Get Your Horse to Load on a Trailer Safely
HorseCity.com File Photo This is a safe and effective way to teach or reteach your horse to load safely on a trailer without causing injury to you or your horse. The first thing to remember is to stay consistent with the cues you use with your horse. They can be voice commands, hand, or body cues. This program can be completed in an afternoon or over a month. Work at a pace that is comfortable to you and the horse. You will need a snaffle bit attached to the halter, a lunge line, and a dressage whip. NO TREATS.
Getting a Nervous Horse Accustomed to Travel
Dr. Lowder: The are so many places out there that offer great trail riding. I would love to go and take my own horse but I am unsure if riding long distances in a trailer has an adverse effect on them. What would be a good way to travel with your horse without putting undo stress on them? Some of the trips I have been looking at are a 2 to 3 day drive.
