Amarillo is where the Old West comes alive and is reflected in
the city’s architecture, attractions and way of life (Amarillo produces 25
percent of the nation's beef). Historic Route 66 runs through Amarillo on
what is also known as Sixth Street and is lined with eateries and shops. The
area also offers beautiful scenery in the form of Palo Duro Canyon, 1,000
feet deep and stretching for more than 100 miles.
Did You Know?
Amarillo is a Spanish word meaning yellow. The city was most likely named for the color of the subsoil in a nearby creek.

Cowboy Morning Breakfast at the Figure 3 Ranch
The cooking starts at the break of dawn, the moon still high above Palo Duro Canyon. Pan-fried sausage sizzles in an iron skillet over an open fire. Sourdough biscuits, maybe the best you've ever tasted, are prepared by an authentic chuck wagon ranch hand who's been at it for more than 30 years. The traditional Texas country breakfast is topped off with scrambled eggs, creamy gravy, orange juice and cowboy coffee. |

Arrowhead: Amarillo's Link(s) to Scottish Links
As the Scots are fond of saying, "nae wind, nae golf" (or, "if there's no wind, it's not golf"). Amarillo golfers have always experienced wind, but now they can test their skills at a real Scottish links-style layout on the Arrowhead Course at Comanche Trail.

The Nat Buzzes with History
Tourists know Amarillo's ''Sixth Street,'' old Route 66, for its shops full of collectibles and treasures. However, the biggest antique on Sixth Street, the one with the most stories to tell, is The Nat Ballroom.

Canyon Site Sets Stage for 'Texas'
Sitting at the bottom of the second largest canyon in America, watching the sun set behind a 600-foot cliff, the audience waits. The prairie breeze sweeps over the canyon rim and sinks across the vibrant colored rock cliffs, leaving a sweet scent. Anticipation runs through the air of the natural amphitheater in Palo Duro Canyon State Park. |
