Rod Run Shifts into Fall Gear
| |
|
Hang on to your roll bars and shift into high gear, folks. The fall edition of the Grand Rod Run is back in town, Sept. 15--17, at the Grand Resort Hotel & Convention Center in Pigeon Forge. Presented by MCS Productions, Grand Run Fall promises participants and spectators alike a wide field of customized automobiles, trucks and more.
During the three-day event, approximately 325 car buffs from 25 different states will converge on the exhibition site to show off their rides, shop for parts and accessories and otherwise socialize with fellow auto enthusiasts.
According to Byron Cooper, a partner in MCS Productions, Grand Run Fall is an "open" show, for all years, models and makes. "You'll see everything from muscle cars of the 1960s to trucks to later model cars that have been modified," Cooper says. He adds that the Pro Street entries are always crowd favorites. These are modified race cars that are "street legal," boasting such customizations as roll bars, oversized wheels and turbo chargers.
Lest you think that these car owners don't take their hobby seriously, consider the amount of money that can be invested in the typical vehicle. "On the average, these cars are worth in the $20,000 range," Cooper explains, but adds that it's not unusual to see an outlay of $50,000 or $70,000 for a custom car. He mentions one particular entry from last year's Grand Run Fall -- a red, '55 Cadillac convertible that had been completely restored. "It looked better than the original," Cooper says. "The owner says he paid over $75,000 to get it into that condition."

No doubt, most participants hope to win back some of their investment in the form of prizes during the event. Ten thousand dollars in cash, as well as plaques and trophies, are up for grabs for the top entries. Cars are judged on such factors as attention to detail, cleanliness, modifications and overall appearance.
Another popular activity at the show is the swap meet, where 100 different vendors are set up for business both inside and outside the convention center. Everything from hard-to-find auto parts to custom accessories to car-related books and clothing can be bought, sold and traded. Of course, there's also a lot of mutual admiration going on between the car owners. "The main thing is to talk among each other, look at other cars, look at new trends and see how they can improve their cars," Cooper says.
Grand Run Fall is open to the public each day. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6 per person, per day, but children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
