Take Flight -- Not Fright
| |
|
Ever had the itch to skydive but somehow knew you'd never be able to fling yourself out of that airplane door? Flyaway Indoor Skydiving solves that little problem.
Flyaway, located at 200 Convention Center Drive, is one of only a few wind tunnels in the country. Its sister tunnel is in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and the Army uses one for training purposes at Fort Bragg. Basically, participants are given a quick (20-minute) instruction on the most effective "crash" position, as well as hand signals for communicating to instructors and vice versa.
A DC-3 propeller at the base of the wind tunnel creates winds of up to 120 mph. Fliers lie down on a mesh covering and let the winds lift them seven feet into the air. The flight lasts approximately three minutes and closely mimics that of a real skydive -- only there's no jumping from a plane.
Flight suits, goggles, helmets, knee and elbow pads, and ear plugs are provided. Height and weight restrictions may apply. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call Flyaway Indoor Skydiving at 702-731-4768.
