All Shook Up

Tim Welch is, er, all shook up. This is understandable, because the entertainer is currently performing as Elvis in a new show ongoing at the New Frontier on the Strip.
Welch, 33, had previously performed as Elvis at private gigs and conventions. "Everybody told me that I had a good sound," Welch says. Presented by the Elvis-A-Rama Museum, there are two different Elvis shows. The afternoon performance highlights the '70s, and the evening show draws on Elvis material from the '50s through the '70s. Also in the evening, Welch shakes, rattles and rolls, accompanied by two female dancers. Welch is clad in costumes faithfully copied from Elvis' originals. There are multiple costume changes during his sets and they feature such familiar clothing as Elvis' "Speedway" jacket and his "Aloha" jumpsuit. Although a long-time Elvis fan who has kept his body in shape by working out, it nonetheless took a major change in appearance beyond the clothes for Welch to become the King. "I was a blonde-haired guy," he says. "I lost some muscle size. Quite a transformation, but I didn't want to lose me." As Welch re-enacts the rock 'n' roll icon, he realizes that the fans just want to see Elvis again. "I am here to give you some Elvis, but I am not him," Welch says.
Tim Welch is "The King in Concert" at 4 p.m. and performs "All shook Up" at 9 p.m. in the New Frontier Showroom. Tickets are $17.95 and $27.95, respectively. Dark Fridays. For reservations, phone 794-8200.
