Getting a Nervous Horse Accustomed to Travel
By Michael Lowder, DVM, MS, Univ. of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Lowder:
The are so many places out there that offer great trail riding. I would love to go and take my own horse but I am unsure if riding long distances in a trailer has an adverse effect on the horse. What would be a good way to travel with your horse without putting undo stress on them? Some of the trips I have been looking at are a two- to three-day drive.

Kimberly,
Your horse will become accustomed to traveling just like you. Take short trips at first and slowly work you way up. It is good if you can stop about every 4 hours for about 30 minutes to give the horse a rest (they will need to spread their legs apart to urinate) and try not to have them on the trailer for more than 8-10 hours at a time. I would suggest staying overnight at barns along the way. Get your horses use to drinking water from various barns around you (so they will not refuse to drink at other places). You might also try putting a Coke in a bucket of water (it will alter the taste and smell, which is what most horses seem to dislike about strange water) at home and get him used to drinking out of it; then you can use that trick on the road. Have a good time.
